Grammar Rules — Direct & Indirect Speech

Pronoun Change Rule (SON Rule): First person pronouns (I, we) change according to Subject of RV; Second person (you) changes according to Object of RV; Third person (he, she, it, they) does not change (SON नियम: 1st Person -> Subject; 2nd Person -> Object; 3rd Person -> No Change।).

Time and Place Changes: Words showing nearness are changed into words showing distance. e.g., this -> that, these -> those, here -> there, today -> that day, tomorrow -> the next day, yesterday -> the previous day.

If the Reporting Verb is in present or future tense, the tense of the reported speech does not change. Pronouns and time words still change. e.g., He says, "I am busy today" -> He says that he is busy that day.

Practice Examples — वाक्य संरचना उदाहरण

He said, "I will meet you tomorrow." | He said that he would meet me the next day. (I -> he, tomorrow -> next day)

She said to me, "These are my books." | She told me that those were her books. (these -> those, my -> her)

Ram says, "I am reading." | Ram says that he is reading.
